HISTORY OF EASTBOROUGH'S POLICE DEPARTMENT

The history of the Eastborough Police Department began in 1938 when the home of Robert C. Foulston was burglarized making it the first major crime to have occurred in the community. Shortly there after, one of the best things that happened to Eastborough took place - the Eastborough Police Department was formed.

Joe Maness was hired as the first Police Officer/Town Marshall. Ray Turner was hired in 1952, and was the police force for many years. He believed that personalized service was an advantage of small town policing. To him, personalized service included knowing the kids and how far they were allowed to roam from home, then returning them to their boundaries when they strayed too far. He served as the Chief for 21 years.

Lee Cox hired on as a patrolman in 1973 and was promoted to Assistant Chief in 1978. He held that position until he retired in July of 1991. Along with Officers Wayne Bennett and Donald Windham, they are the only three Officers that have retired from the Police Department.

The current Police Department staff carries on the tradition of policing by continuing to protect and serve the people of Eastborough. The Officers often go beyond the call of duty to assist our citizens, and their efforts are greatly appreciated.

In July of 1991, David Bridgewater was hired as the City's first professionally trained and experienced Chief of Police. He came to the City with 23 years of law enforcement experience and provided solid leadership within the police force. One of his goals is to constantly improve the quality and professionalism of the Department, yet continue to maintain that personal touch. He also feels, as Ray Turner did, that a smaller Police Department has some advantages over larger organizations by knowing the residents of the community better and therefore being able to serve them better.

One of the benefits of living in Eastborough - the Eastborough Police Department.
