From time to time the City of Eastborough is approached by residents who want to leave some sort of memorial to the city in the memory of a Eastborough resident. Unfortunately, we don't always have real opportunities available to properly use these types of donations.
As you are all aware, Eastborough recently added curbs and gutters to the west side streets and completely repaved all those streets. During this construction it was proposed that the city add benches to a number of the "circle parks" found at intersections of streets on the west side.
After examining the situation it was felt the two most likely locations for such benches were the circles on the southwest and northeast corners of the area.
Since the cost of such benches were not included in the original budget for this work, the city council has requested that I contact residents to see if there was any interest on the part of residents in donating these benches as a memorial.
The benches in question would match the benches currently installed at the south side park. They would be set over a concrete pad and would include a 5" x 9" brass plaque identifying the resident in whose name the bench was donated.
The cost of these benches, concrete pads and installation would be approximately $2500. If you have an interest in providing the funds for one of these benches as a memorial or other donation please contact Britt Brown at bmb40@cox.net or 316-685-0858.

It's America's Night Out Against Crime!
The "28th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), is scheduled for Tuesday evening, August 2, 2011. Eastborough will be participating for the second year and we need volunteers to help plan fun activities centered at the Pavilion of our beautiful park.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:
We would love to have more participation this year. Last year's event, held on one of the hottest evenings of the year, drew about 25-30 people. We want to plan more activities this year and need some volunteers to help with planning and execution.
NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits our community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.
If you are interested in being involved, please contact Susan Moneypenny at (316) 683-8601 or via email at smoneypenny@cox.net.

As many of you know we have been battling the geese and duck population in the new park area for some time. Although we all love them they can be very destructive. For example, they eat the grass around the pond area including adjoining property owner’s lawns. They do their business everywhere which makes it difficult to walk in the area without stepping in something and it causes a health risk. We have also been advised that the water quality in our pond is not good and will probably get worse over time. All of this is a result of too many geese and ducks.
We have been talking to other pond owners as well as the State of Kansas Wildlife Department trying to find an answer to our problem. Without exception, everyone says that the number one problem is FEEDING THE WILDLIFE. They have every reason to stay as long as they continue to get food from well meaning residents or park visitors. In order to limit the population to a manageable number we must stop feeding them! There is enough natural food available for a small number of ducks or geese. The others will not starve; they will merely relocate to another area.

We recently reported the West Side street construction program was being deferred until spring because of citizen concerns over holiday plans. While we did indeed take into consideration citizen requests in this regard, it became apparent we were not going to make the September start date. The engineering of the project requires extensive coordination with the City of Wichita and the utility companies providing service to our city. Before the final engineering plans can be completed, Wichita and the utility companies need to review the plans to see if there are any conflicts with sewer, water, electric and gas services. We have been advised this review cannot occur until September. The final engineering plans and therefore the requests for contract proposals can't be made until this review is completed. Since we don't won't the construction to get bogged down during the winter months, we have targeted the first of March as our construction start date.
The Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO) will be conducting a survey. The purpose of the survey is to gather data on travel patterns, as well as transportation priorities for residents in the region.
