14 Dec 2009 ***** ATTENTION EASTBOROUGH RESIDENTS *****

You may have seen in the news recently about brazen night time burglaries that have taken place just west of Eastborough in the College Hill neighborhood. The perpetrators are boldly entering the residences while the homeowners are in bed asleep. These generally are not forced entries. Entry is made through an unlocked door. The burglars are not in the residence very long. They take valuables that are readily accessible and easy to carry, i.e. laptops, cameras, I-pods, purses, etc. They have also taken vehicles whose keys they have found or were left in the vehicle while it was parked in the garage.

Unfortunately two of our residents were victims of the same type of crime during the early morning hours of Friday, 12/11/09. It has been determined that the homes were burglarized been 12:00AM and 5:00AM. There was also an unlocked vehicle gone through.

As your police chief I am reminding everyone to be extra cautious and vigilant. Place small valuables out of sight and/or in a secure location in your home. Make sure all exterior doors to your residence are locked, including the door into an attached garage if possible. A garage is not a secure location, remove the keys from your vehicle's ignition and take them inside. If you have an alarm, set it when you retire for the evening. Turn on exterior lights at night, the motion sensor type are best.

If you would like a security check of your residence please call, our Officers are here to help you in any way possible. If you see any suspicious activity at any time please call 911 right away. Have a safe and merry Christmas.

23 Nov 2009 Eastborough Gardening with Echo Landscapes, Inc.

We've had a wonderful year for getting shrubs and perennials started in the North Park and street plantings. The shrubs and perennials have taken hold quite nicely thanks to the new watering system. We chose plants that should do well with little water once they've established themselves.

Donations of plants for the beds have been appreciated very much. Watch for the roses to gather momentum as they establish in their new homes. If anyone has extra flowers, grasses and groundcovers to offer for possible use in the Eastborough beds please call me at 316-993-9857 perhaps we can transplant them to the community beds this spring.

Thanks so much for letting us garden for you.

19 Oct 2009 Eastborough Officers Face Danger Daily

The myth that ‘nothing happens in a small town’ is just that, a myth.  Unfortunately it became a reality recently for one of Eastborough’s Police Officers.  In the early morning hours of October 10th, Officer Mike Cross backed a WPD Officer on a DUI stop at Woodlawn and Willowbrook.  At the conclusion of the stop the officers were returning to their respective patrol cars.  As Officer Cross passed in front of his vehicle an impaired driver, who was texting at the time, struck the rear of Officer Cross’s patrol car.  In turn the vehicle struck Officer Cross in the left leg as he was trying to get out of the way.

Officer Cross was thrown into the air, bounced off of the hood of his patrol car and luckily landed in the grass.  Officer Cross was transported by EMS to the hospital where it was found he suffered a fracture to his tibia.  It may not seem like it, but Officer Cross was very fortunate in this incident.  His patrol car continued forward and struck the WPD vehicle which in turn struck the WPD Officer standing in front it.  That officer received minor injuries.  Things could have been much worse for Officer Cross had he not been thrown into the air.

This incident bears out what our Eastborough Police Officers are aware of everyday that they come to work.  Let it serve as a reminder to our citizens that ‘things happen’ in the City of Eastborough.

11 Sep 2009 New Chief of Police

It is my extreme pleasure to announce to our citizens of Eastborough that after a special council meeting held on September 1st, your city council has hired a new chief of police.  The search committee members consisting of City Clerk Kay Brada, Councilwoman Jennifer Wagle, Councilman Britt Brown and Officer Mike Cross, after an extensive review of over 30 applicants, has selected Mr. Daniel E. Bardezbain.

Danny, as he likes to be called, comes to us with an extensive history of law enforcement. He served in the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office for over 30 years retiring as a Major. He held several supervisory positions which included Detective Sergeant, Training Sergeant, Internal Affairs Commander, Support Bureau Commander and Detention Bureau Commander. He has a Masters Degree of Public Administration from Wichita State University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administrative Justice from the same university. He also was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 182nd Session at the FBI Academy, Quantico, Virginia.

Mr. Bardazbain will officially begin work on Monday, September 14th. He plans to be aggressive in meeting our Eastborough residents. In October, your city council, date to be announced, will hold a "welcoming party" at city hall for Chief Bardazbain. This will be a great opportunity to introduce yourselves to him.

I am very grateful to our selection committee, knowing they spent many hours interviewing many candidates. I think you will all agree that once you meet Chief Bardezbain, you will appreciate their efforts.

Sincerely,
Thom F. Rosenberg, M.D.
Mayor
